The Air Loom Record and Review

"hype!" track "Mind Your Hats" released(2007 November 10)

The first track of 'hype!'is released. This is the little 11 song mini-album that I threw together to entertain myself while taking a break from working on 'Octopus Zoo' It's fairly raw and goofy, and the whole thing kind of centers around a famous cook by the name of Mary. This song, "Mind Your Hats" is an instrumental lead in track. So, go check out the music page and grab it. The other hype songs have been removed in anticipation of the new versions..

"hype!" track "Day-Glo Sugar" released(2007 August 6)

I'm in the middle of working on songs for the upcoming concept album "Octopus Zoo", which will be released around the beginning of 2008. Before that comes out there, there's going to be an 11 track ep with the title of "hype!" hitting your MP3 players in October. I've released the first two songs from that ep today. Like the rest of the "hype!" collection, these are songs I don't really feel are good enough for the album. In fact, in the case of these two, they are songs I just threw together cuz the ideas were in my head and I wanted to get them out. So, go check out the music page and grab those two songs.

Upcoming album "Octopus Zoo" announced(2007 June 28)

I've been working on the new album, which will be the second Vacant Sky Parlor album. I like to consider it the first chapter.. we'll say that 'Liederkreis' was kinda of more like the preface. This is looking to be a song about drifting off to sleep dreaming about the sea. Lots of synthesizer goodness, vintage drum machine sounds and rocking drum lines, much better vocals, and even some guitar. I look forward to sharing more about it here, but I want to wait until more is certain. I expect to release this in December 2007. A fine way to end the year!

VSP Album "Liederkreis" released online(2007 April 10)

Finally, all 12 songs of the Liederkreis web release are available and ready for download in mp3 format. You can grab those from the music page. Enjoy.

Song: "Fools from the Mouths of Caves"(2007 April 6)

Now you can experience the prophetic ramblings of a madman that introduce the new album. "fools from the mouths of caves", a song that may very well scare people away from the rest of the album before it even gets started..

"Looks Like Mars" Released.(2007 April 4)

This little song comes streaming from space to your headphones! "looks like mars", is a a message to all those that play in the dirt and roll in the grass. Welcome home. The final release date has been moved from April 3 to April 10.

Another mp3 : "The Cones".(2007 April 1)

This is a strange little slow song, "the cones", which is sure to offer some form of delight. I'm getting over a cold that lasted about 5 days. Unfortunately, this drained most all of my energy and I am now behind schedule on the release of these songs. The final release date has been moved from April 3 to April 10.

"The Horizon (is moving down)" released!(2007 March 29)

Here is the more poppy song from the album, "the horizon". As far as the writing, this is one of the songs I am most proud of. I have, however, no illusions about my singing.. still, I do it anyway. Anyway, it's a good song.. pick it up.

New mp3, "Clouds and Honey."(2007 March 25)

Here comes another short song, this is a noisy one.. "clouds and honey". This is just over a minute long.. long enough to agitate your mind and put your heart out to pasture in the mid-winter snow. Dig it.

"Mango and Starfruit" mp3 released. (2007 March 22)

Now I throw another song out there for download. "mango and starfruit" is a short little song. A fiery weather report from a land of fresh fruit salad, if you will. Like "they know what i've done", this one is also just under one minute long. It's a bit of a bouncy interlude between "the horizon (is moving down)" and "blue icecream", and it ought to set your minds at ease. Hope you enjoy it. This is one of my faves from the album.

Song, "They Know What I've Done", released. (2007 March 18)

I've released "they know what i've done" for immediate mp3 download. This is one of the shortest songs on the album, at just under one minute long. It's also a trippy instrumental thing that mostly serves as a transition between songs. This provides you a glimpse into the track that comes before it, "Clouds and Honey", which I will release later this week. Hopefully this serves as teaser enough for you to be interested in future song releases, and the album as a whole.

Vacant Sky Parlor song, "Blue Icecream" released. (2007 March 15)

I have finally finished and released the first song from the upcoming album. I've put the mp3 up on the site, so you may now download "blue icecream", and enjoy it. This song features some vocals that are semi-sung in a spoken style, with the accompanying vocals of my 3 year old son. He is rather faint in the background, but his hardwork is appreciated. It's one of the songs drawing on my influence from old Moog records of the 60s and 70s. This is the 3rd longest song on the album, at about 6 minutes, and also one of the least rhythmic. Coming up, I'll be releasing the fifth song next, and working my way backwards and then wrapping around or something.

RPM Edition of Upcoming 'Liederkreis' Completed. (2007 March 1)

In accordance with the requirements of the RPM Challenge, I completed the writing and recording of an album. I don't completely like the way it turned out. However, I do feel it's good enough for me to say that I wrote and recorded an album within the month of February. And that was the intention. I got it on cd, threw together an insert card for the back of the cd case, and mailed it off to their office.

Now, before I actually release it here.. I want to go back and record all of the vocals again. Then I will mix it down again, do a bit better with the mastering and then it'll be ready for general consumption. I don't intend to make any changes to the music, or writing. I want to stay within the spirit of the RPM Challenge. My intention is just to get some moderately acceptable vocals down. Let's just say I recorded all of the vocals for a 45 minute album in the time frame of about 90 minutes, one take.. I was exhausted, had just got out of bed and wasn't fully awake yet, and had to keep my volume down cuz it was midnight and I have nieghbors.

Overall, despite the remarkably poor vocals, I am very pleased with this album. It's not an extreme work of genius or anything, but it's not supposed to be. It's a fun 45 minutes of synthetic psychotropic flavor served up like carbonated cough syrup. At any rate, I look forward to sharing it once I have some voice on there that I'm not ashamed of.

Anyway, I figure I'll release the 12 songs as they get done, over the course of the next month. Hopefully it'll come faster than that, we'll see.

Vacant Sky Parlor Website Created! (2007 February 24)

I should've known that if I went more than a few weeks with this VSP project that I would want to create a website to go along with it. Now that I'm nearing completion of the album, it actually kind of makes some sense to go ahead and do it. Actually hearing the music, I knew that the usual soft and easy look wasn't going to work.. So here's shocking pink, laser yellow, dangerous green, safety orange, a mint lassi, and some soft pink. I combine that with some unusually large sans-serif type and strange abuse of margins and padding. I think it's alarmingly simple and simply alarming.

In addition to the garrish modern design, there's also going to be some mp3s to download. There's also a little bio and a picture section, eventually it'll show pics of me, no doubt making faces and wearing ridiculous hats. I had no trouble putting together a links page. There's a section dedicated to news and musings for people who like to read. I'll try to keep up with putting little journal entries, random updates and news items and stuff here. Also, I'll put the most current stuff up on the top page.

Here's to a Vacant Sky Parlor new century!
